Skiing

Mount Snow boasts 86 trails on 600 acres with 20 lifts including two summit express lifts and the only “six pack” bubble chair in the United States. Before you go, check the ski report.

Snow Tubing

A truly exciting and completely safe winter activity for any age is snow tubing. We have three local venues that offer any level of exhilaration within minutes of the inn. It is a great, affordable escape for those who might like to enjoy the snow without a full-day commitment to it.

Guided Snowmobile Tours

Enjoy a guided snowmobile tour in the Green Mountain National Forest of Vermont, operated by Snowmobile Vermont. Explore a wide variety of terrain, ranging from thickly wooded pines to wide open stretches.

Snowmobile Vermont offers 1-hour backcountry tours or 2-hour mountain tours. Tours leave from the base area of Mount Snow. Snowmobile tours offered by Snowmobile Vermont are customized for all abilities, and no experience is necessary. Tours include snowmobile and helmet rentals.

The Vast Trail Network
Southern Vermont is well known for being one of the best places to go “sledding.” The Wilmington Inn is only a few miles from tens of connection points to the famous VAST Trail network that includes more than 5,000 miles of free trails that span from the border of Massachusetts to Canada. In addition, there are a number of restaurants and gas stations that welcome snowmobilers. Let us help you arrange a rider’s permit and plan a day trip for you during your stay with us! Don’t have a snowmobile? No problem, a local rental company can set you up according to your skill and adventure levels.

Prospect Mountain

One of the best all-terrain Nordic mountains is located about 13 miles from The Wilmington Inn, Prospect Mountain. Prospect Mountain maintains more than 30 kilometers of trails. When the snow falls, the trails are expertly groomed for both skating and classical cross-country skiing. Most trails have tracks set on either side with a wide skating lane in the center. There are also special snowshoeing and single-track trails. We have trails from beginner to expert. The Mountain Trail is popular with experts looking to climb more than 400 feet to the top of the mountain. After enjoying the view into the valley below, get ready for several kilometers of downhill fun!

The Base Lodge at Prospect Mountain offers a comfortable and inviting place to relax and recharge. The spacious lodge has a country atmosphere with a large stone fireplace, woodstove, and big windows to enjoy the view of Vermont’s scenery. The lodge restaurant serves everything from hearty meals to light snacks. The menu includes foods to satisfy our gourmet, vegetarian, and health-conscious customers. The Base Lodge and Ski Shop are generally open every day in season from 9-5 (or until nightfall).

The Wilmington Inn is proud to announce guests at the inn can receive discounted tickets & rentals at Prospect Mountain. Have your own cross-country gear or snowshoes; discounted tickets are $15! Back Country Guided Snowshoeing

Good for all skill levels

Starting at the Boyd Family Farm fields, located along rt 100. Hike north along the Deerfield river through the farm’s snow-covered vegetable fields. After crossing the Deerfield River and then the Ellis brook, the trail then leads up through a fir forest. Learn about all the trees and hopefully identify some wildlife tracks. After the wooded moderate uphill trek, the trail opens up into one of the farm’s most beautiful views. A wide-open view across the valley to both Mount snow and Haystack ski areas. A great spot for a snack and hot cocoa will be provided on the tour. You will learn about the Boyd family’s history in Wilmington starting in 1775, that’s right, the year before the revolutionary war!

Good for all skill levels

This tour is the same as above but starts later in the day. It includes a headlamp, fire, a plate of Vermont cheeses, and assorted crackers. You are welcome to bring a favorite beverage or a bottle of wine to complement the snacks and to watch the sun go down. On clear evenings the walk back to the vehicles across the open fields will give you a breathtaking view of the stars and moon.

Skill level moderate to experienced

Starting at a private parking lot at an undisclosed location, hike up old logging roads to a spot few visitors to see as this trail is not on any map. This is a challenging hike that will get your heart rate up. It’s all worth the effort when you get to the top and look south across the valley. The valley is known as the freezing hole by old-time Vermonters. Along the way, you will learn about the trees and animals that make up this part of Vermont’s National Forest. You will also learn about the history of Wilmington and the Boyd family who were literally among the first to settle along the Deerfield river in the valley below. Hot cocoa and snacks will be provided.

Skill level moderate

While trekking down the century-old railroad bed you’ll get some great views of the Vermont woods and Harriman Lake. Learn all about the logging industry that put Wilmington on the map, and the Boyd family’s role in settling the town. The mid-way point is a small canyon blasted through the rocks as the railroad was built. Cool icicles form from the water coming out of the rocks. although not a cave, the place is known by locals as the Crystal Cave. Great place for some hot cocoa and a snack. On the way back we will descend to the lake, passing the old foundation of the Boyd homestead dating back to before the Revolutionary War. We will pass Boyd Brook and head north up the lake. ½ mile up the lake another trail will bring us back to the railroad bed.

This picturesque farm, located in Townshend Vermont, is surrounded by majestic mountains and is the perfect backdrop for that special sleigh ride, ideal for any winter occasion. Guests are taken on their private trails that are groomed especially for the sleigh. The sleighs can accommodate up to 4 adults on their larger private sleigh and children of all ages are welcome. Sleigh rides are typically forty-five minutes. They also offer the option of a tour after the sleigh ride. This includes cookies & hot drinks with your guide, a guided tour of our facilities, meeting the horses, and a chance to play & snuggle with their foals.

Ice Fishing

The Boyd Family also offers ice fishing charters for all experience levels. On these trips, they target trophy largemouth bass on Lake Sadawga with plenty of perch and pickerel to keep you busy! They also offer charters on Harriman Reservoir for trophy Brook trout. Brown trout, rainbow trout, landlocked salmon, rainbow smelt, and perch are also caught here!

These Ice fishing trips run seven days a week beginning around January 1 and ending around March 31. The guides offer half-day (7 AM – 11 AM) and full-day (7 AM-2 AM) charters. Half-day charters include snacks and hot cocoa, and full-day charters include lunch. Start times can be flexible, and no group is too large or too small.

Safety is the guide’s number one priority. They check ice conditions regularly and never bring clients to areas that they have not previously checked. We carry well-maintained safety gear and your guide wears the Striker Ice Suit, a floating suit designed for ice fishing. On these charters, the guides provide live bait, tackle, rod and reels, tip-ups, ice cleats, insulated ice shanty, and a propane heater to keep you comfortable on the ice. They provide a warm meal for full-day charters, snacks, and warm drinks for half-day charters.

The only thing you have to do is dress warm!
